March 2024 – STORIES FROM THE FIELD:

Stories from Doctor Junior Etienne- For You Haiti’s Managing Director

Sarah Charles

Born with Cerebral Palsy and microcephaly at La Gonave, a place where medical care is not accessible to everyone, life hasn’t been easy for Sarah Charles.

Since she was born, all her medical charges have been covered by For You Haiti, and our team has monitored her motor development and weight regularly.

The lack of prenatal care at La Gonave has always been a huge problem and with many consequences. Through its prenatal care program, For You Haiti offers free treatment to the most vulnerable patients, free ultrasound, free consultation, and also offers training to many midwives, and thanks to that 121 mothers have given birth to 128 healthy babies! (7 twins!)

Dr Berly: – Staff Spotlight!

An authentic leader, a very good pediatrician, and a wonderful friend. Dr. Berly and I (Dr. Junior)  met at the Wesleyan Hospital in La Gonave in 2017, we were both working there and a couple of years later he decided to continue the medical practice as a pediatrician due to the love he always carries for children.

Born in a family of 4 children at Nan Mango, Dr. Berly has chosen to return to La Gonave after completing medical school in the Dominican Republic.

Dr. Berly is the only full-time pediatrician working in La Gonave.

Fanica:

Fanica is one of our most lovely patients! Since she was born she couldn’t even go to school because of her skin disease. Unfortunately, specialized medical care was affordable for the family. Now, thanks to For You Haiti, education and medical care are both accessible to her!

FYH has sent her many times to Port-Au-Prince for specialized evaluation with dermatologists and already tried many treatments due to the medical technology limitations we can’t do all the tests we would like to for her. However, we remain confident that we are getting closer and closer to her final and well-adapted treatment.

Now our biggest obstacle is that with everything that is happening now in the country, especially in Port-Au-Prince, we can’t send her to her regular appointments with the dermatologist.

We are sure that one day Fanica will get her treatment, For You Haiti will never give up on her.
