Daphnie Alty- A classroom that provides hope.
“Sometimes in life when you can’t change something you have to accept and let it go because everything happen for a reason.” These words are from Marie Thierry Nelchoix telling us the story of Dapnie Alty, her first baby.
Daphnie is a 14-year-old girl with disabilities. She was born healthy, but while she was growing up her mother found out that she didn’t have the same development as other infants at her age. The mom visited many clinics to find why, but unfortunately she didn’t have an answer. At 3 years old she still couldn’t say any words, but the mother was living with the belief that one day she will see her first baby talk to her.
As the years passed without any change , the mom started to lose hope, but she still believed that a miracle could happen one day. Even with this disability, Dapnie integrated into the Elementary school, but as she couldn’t interact and learn like the other children, the principal said to the mom that she needed a special needs class. That didn’t exist in La Gonave at the time.
Fortunately, after two years spent at home, now Dapnie is part of the For You Haiti Special Needs Class. She can’t speak but she’s happy and spends special time outside the home with peers and loving teachers.

Danaica Charles – a sweet, tiny baby patient!
Danaica Charles is a 10-month-old girl from Anse-à-Galets. She was born at home after a normal pregnancy, but one day after she had fever and irritability reasons why she was brought to the hospital. After evaluation the doctors found out that she was passing meconium(earliest stool) to the vagina and her anus was perforated. She was admitted for neonatal sepsis (infection in the blood) and imperforate anus with recto-vestibula fistula.
After completed the sepsis treatment, she was referred to the mainland for surgery intervention. She was admitted for surgery, but unfortunately, while she was in the Operating room she had a complication, a seizure just a minute before the operation, so the surgery was postponed. After many days admitted, doctors found out that she was not ready for the surgery so she got discharged.
After many visits, regardless of the increased turmoil on the mainland, in March 2024 she was admitted again and got the surgery. Everything went well this time! This is the first step of a long way because her condition needs two more surgeries to complete the treatment. Our staff and care team are doing everything in their power to ensure she makes it.
