“Health” is a word that holds immense significance, especially here in Haiti, due to the numerous deficiencies in our healthcare system. Not everyone has access to it, and one glaring example of this is heart surgery.
The journey for a patient in need of surgery in Haiti can be incredibly long, arduous, exorbitantly expensive, and unfortunately, often feels hopeless as well. Can you imagine telling someone who lives on less than 1 USD a day that their life depends on a heart surgery that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars?
This is where our partner organization, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, steps in. They are also partners in saving lives!
For You Haiti had the incredible opportunity to send someone to Dallas for a 5-week mission, assisting four patients from Haiti Cardiac Alliance during their surgical journey. I accompanied a total of four patients, two girls and two boys aged 18 to 26 years old. All the patients underwent a series of medical tests, including blood tests, X-Rays, heart echo, and EKG, among others. The stress they experienced while staying at our house was palpable. I provided individual counseling to them every day.
On the day of their surgeries, I made a promise to be there for them when they opened their eyes, and these moments were of utmost importance. I communicated daily with their parents and friends, keeping them updated. Three of the patients had successful surgeries, but for the fourth patient, unfortunately, the risk was deemed too high for the cardiologist to proceed with the operation. I have included some photos of these brave patients and our time together.
