Dr. Junior crosses a stormy sea and gang territory to care for gunshot victim
Read on for an incredible story about Doctor Junior, our dedicated full-time physician.
In a critical situation involving a teenager shot accidentally in Anse a Galets, Doctor Junior’s exceptional response was nothing short of heroic. Upon receiving the distress call, he rushed to the scene, addressing the urgent medical needs of the bleeding patient. The situation demanded immediate evacuation, but obstacles arose—Haiti Air Ambulance couldn’t fly due to authorization issues at night.
Undeterred, Doctor Junior, without a second thought for his safety, authorized a risky boat journey through dangerous waters to transport the patient to the mainland. The sea was rough, and a storm hit mid-journey, yet Doctor Junior continued providing medical care, ensuring oxygen and supplies were on hand.

Upon reaching the mainland, a new challenge emerged: the ambulance meant to transport them to the ER couldn’t navigate gang territory. Faced with this unimaginable setback, Doctor Junior, resourceful as ever, secured a public transport van to rush the patient to the closest ER in Saint Marc.
Arriving at 9pm, the child underwent emergency surgery, and Doctor Junior didn’t stop at a mere handover to the surgeon. He continued working until 3am, ensuring the successful removal of the bullet and the patient’s stability.
Remarkably, Doctor Junior returned to La Gonave by boat at 5am, seamlessly transitioning to his normal Monday routine, treating over 20 pediatric patients in our busy clinic. The team’s selfless dedication, often deeming such feats as “normal,” underscores their heroic commitment to saving young lives. Join us in celebrating the extraordinary efforts of our unsung heroes.
