Brahms is a two (2) years old boy from Tipalmiste, a remote village on La Gônave island.
Guirlaine is Brahm’s mother. Brahms was Guirlaine’s first baby. Everything was fine, like every pregnant woman, she was excited to meet her baby. But one day during a check-up in the third trimester she received unexpected news. After an ultrasound, the doctors informed her that the Baby had a condition called Hydrocephalus. She then was admitted and a c-section delivery was done one day later.
Brahms was born without any complications and his head circumference looked normal so his mother believed that he didn’t really have Hydrocephalus. When he was 3 months of age, Brahm’s mother noticed that he started having some abnormal movements. He was having seizures. Guirlaine then brought him to the hospital and he was referred to see a neurosurgeon. A diagnosis Guirlaine couldn’t afford to have done.
In her village, a leader told Guirlaine that she could go to For you Haiti for help. At FYH Brahms was evaluated by the medical staff and was sent to the mainland for a head CT Scan and Neurosurgery evaluation. The CT scan confirm the diagnosis, hydrocephalus.
Thanks to For You Haiti, in April of 2022, Brahms had a successful neurosurgical intervention at Bernard Mevs Hospital. Unfortunately, one week after he got discharged he had a complication he was brought back to the hospital. After neurological evaluation the neurosurgeon found out that the drain didn’t work as expected, he then decided to do another neurosurgery. Brahms was discharged, but about one week after that he had again some complications and was brought back to the hospital where a third intervention was decided.
Finally, Brahms now is progressing very well. He has normal development. He can play like other kids and can go to school. He was born to fight. We are so happy to see Brahms today because most of the children here with his condition don’t have the same improvement as him. He is a real miracle.
