Djoulie Demare Is one of FYH’s hydrocephalus patients who had the opportunity to have surgery at Bernard Mevs Hospital in Port au Prince in April 2022.
It was already 3 pm when Carmy and I took the decision to go visit Djoulie in the countryside. Her Mom told us that she wasn’t feeling good with a fever and didn’t eat much for many days. As a post-op little patient, it wasn’t difficult to take the decision to go! It took 90 minutes by motorcycle and 45 min on foot hiking to get to Djoulie for a visit.
Once we arrived, we found she was with a fever and somnolence. Her head circumference had grown 1cm. Apparently, her Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy / ETV was not working well and at that moment, I knew she had to go back to Bernard Mevs Hospital for another surgery.
We transferred her immediately to Port au Prince and worked non-stop until she got her surgery. It consisted of Dr. La Fortune, her neurosurgeon doing a ventricular Peritoneal / VP Derivation with a shunt. And it was all a success!
3 weeks after the surgery FYH medical team gladly brought Djoulie and Djoulie’s mom back on the island, where she received medical care and the love that she deserved at our care house to recover from her surgery!!
